Trivia
Residing on the Cornelius Tower, the Jubilee Clock was constructed by local astronomer and watchmaker, Louis Zimmer. Can you guess what purpose the 1425 tower originally served?
a. As a communication tower used to send messages by transmitting light and smoke signals with firewood
b. As a monument dedicated to ruler Philip the Good
c. As a holding cell where prisoners of the Hundred Years’ War were tortured and beaten d. As a fortress used to protect the town of Lier and its inhabitants
The Cornelius Tower, also known as the Zimmer Tower, was originally a keep of Lier's fourteenth century city fortifications. In 1930, astronomer and clockmaker, Louis Zimmer, built the Jubilee (or Centenary) Clock, to commemorate 100 years of the independence of Belgium. Consisting of 12 clocks encircling one central clock, with a total of 57 dials, the Jubilee Clock shows time on all continents, phases of the moons, times of tides, and many other periodic phenomena.
